If you ask a lot of people what drag is, they will say: ‘a man dressing up as a woman’. Or sometimes, ‘a woman dressing up as a man’.
But this is only a tiny part of the story.
This Genderfuck Drag Workshop explores drag beyond the binary: trying to imagine a drag that isn’t queen, or king, but something totally different, something other. Drag that makes space for the genderqueer, non-binary and trans body, the alien, the messed up, the messy.
In this workshop we will re-imagine drag, then do it ourselves! It’s open to all: from people who have never done drag but want to try it, to experienced performers.
Ray Filar is a UK-based drag artist and writer, interested in feminism, genderfuck drag, queer subcultures and anti-capitalism. Supported by Arts Council England and the Camden Peoples' Theatre in London, their solo show, Non-Binary Electro Hour, is about gender nonconformity and in-between spaces. Their performances include the Tate Britain, Glastonbury and Latitude festivals, Cologne Art Week, with David Hoyle, Duckie, and anywhere else that will have them.
Imagine yourself as a non-binary person, how would you dress if you would feel in-between, what would your alien-self put on? Be daring and creative, the only limit is the reach of your imagination…
No previous experience is required to attend the workshop. Working language will be English. Workshop fee is 15 Euro. All performers at Syndicate of Outlandish Entities can attend the workshop free of charge but still need to apply.
